The Vienna Jewish Choir was established 25 years ago and counts more than 50 active members whose mission it is to play a vital role in the aim of making Jewish culture an integral part of life in Vienna again. In 2005 the choir started a self organized tour through Romania, Moldova and Ukraine to sing a series of concerts in cities formerly famous for their Jewish populations, such as Czernovits, Beltz and Kluj. Nowadays the Jewish community forms only a small minority in these cities. So the people attending the concerts in schools, synagogues or outside a Jewish retirement home, seemed to be even more overwhelmed and happy to hear some of their favourite Yiddish songs. For the choir itself it was an emotional journey to places where some of the members have their own origins and for me it was a very interesting private lesson in Jewish culture and history.
