It was in June 2009 when DIE ZEIT approached me to take portraits of the writer Herta Müller. They told me that she hasn´t been photographed for quite a while because she actually hates it. So I was already prepared to have a difficult job. When I talked to her on the phone, she said that it always reminds her of the interrogations by the Romanian secret service several years ago when lamps were burning in her face. So I knew I had to be careful and entered her apartment without any artificial light. And then we talked and I took pictures and I think she felt quite safe with the situation. Three months later she was awarded the Nobel prize for literature and the photos were published all around the world.
